2green onionsthinly sliced (for garnish)
1tablespoonsesame seeds (for garnish)
Instructions
Prepare Tofu: Begin by pressing the tofu for a minimum of 30 minutes, using a tofu press or by wrapping it in paper towels and placing a weight on top. This step is crucial for achieving a firmer texture. Once pressed, cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes for uniform cooking.
Coat Tofu: In a mixing bowl, add the cubed tofu and sprinkle the cornstarch over it. Gently toss the tofu with your hands or a spatula until each piece is evenly coated in cornstarch, which will help achieve a delightful crispiness.
Heat Oil: In a large, non-stick skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Wait until the oil shimmers and is hot enough to ensure that the tofu will fry properly without sticking.
Fry Tofu: Carefully place the coated tofu cubes in the skillet in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are a deep golden brown and crispy. Depending on your skillet size, you may need to work in batches. Once finished, transfer the cooked tofu onto a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
Make Sauce: Lower the heat to medium and add the minced garlic to the same skillet, stirring it for about 30 seconds or until fragrant, taking care not to burn it. Next, pour in the honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir the mixture thoroughly to combine, allowing it to simmer gently for 2-3 minutes, letting the flavors meld together beautifully.
Glaze Tofu: Return the crispy tofu back to the skillet. Gently toss the tofu in the honey garlic sauce, ensuring each piece is well coated. Allow it to cook for an additional 2 minutes so the tofu can absorb the flavors of the sauce.
Serve: Carefully transfer the glazed tofu to a serving dish. Garnish generously with chopped green onions and a sprinkling of sesame seeds for added texture and visual appeal.
Notes
For a vegan option, substitute honey with maple syrup.
